In our lifetime, most of us would have shifted houses several times. No matter how many times we’ve gone through it, moving is still a stressful and tiring process. There are bound to be things that you miss or overlook. There are also a few things that you tend to leave until the very last minute which should actually be done well in advance of your moving date. Keeping this in mind, we’ve put together a handy checklist that you would want to follow before proceeding with the big move.
1. Set up your internet connection
As we are all living in the digital age, it is almost impossible for us to go internet-less, even for a day. Therefore, it is crucial to set up the internet connection at your new house prior to moving in. Internet service providers are often booked weeks in advance, so you need to get this sorted as soon as possible. After applying for an internet service, it still takes couple of weeks before you actually get a connection. We all know living in a new home without internet can be very frustrating and inconvenient, so save yourself the stress and book early.
2. Update your family and friends with your new contact information
It is essential to change your new mailing address officially. It’s also equally important to update your relatives and friends. One of the easiest methods is to send a text message notifying them of your new address and phone number. By doing this, the important people in your life are able to contact you as soon as you start living at your new residence.
3. Have the new house professionally cleaned
Generally, most properties will be given a good clean up by the previous owners or tenants before they move out. Nevertheless, sometimes a house could still be empty for a long period in between tenants. This means that the property would need another round of cleaning before you move in. There is an abundance of part-time maid agencies in the country, offering maids who are willing to work for a few hours to clean your house. Hire them and they should do a thorough cleaning job.
4. Pack a first night box
You might find this silly, but the first night box is essential for a successful move. The last thing you want to do after sorting your move out is to tear open every box just to look for your shower gel or pyjamas. A first night box should contain a change of clothing, basic toiletries, toilet paper, pyjamas, towels, bed linen and any other essentials you may require, like tea bags or a coffee plunger. Trust us, it will make your first night in your new home a pleasant one, because you don’t have to frantically search through boxes at midnight trying to find your toothbrush.
5. Make a copy of your house key
This is something that you should immediately do once you get the keys to your new house. Moving days are stressful and busy. It’s extremely easy for the keys to get lost or locked inside the house, especially since you don’t have an established key routine at your new residence yet. Have a set of spare keys for each member of the household, as well as close relatives living nearby.
